One of the most popular forms of meditation over the last decade or so has been the widespread use of “brain entrainment” software and audio to induce altered states of consciousness in the person meditating. While this has been around in various forms for about two decades, for the most part, it’s availability had been fairly limited until recently. What do these audio tracks promise to do? Well, without getting into the neurophysiology of the brain (something I am certainly no expert at all!) the audio tracks use sound playing at different frequencies, and through the use of earphones, these contrasting frequencies, or beats, gently forces the brain to “re-sync” the frequencies into one that induces blissful states of awareness.
Is it safe? Absolutely! There have been many scientific studies of brain entrainment technologies showing that not only is it safe…it also can create some pretty spectatular results across a broad assortment of benefits and rewards. Of course if you are pre-disposed to having epilepsy, seizures and the like, and in general of course, you should ALWAYS read the precautions before using anything that might not match your particular state of mind. ( no pun intended!)
I have used many of the popular “brands” of meditation audio available, including Hemi Sync, Holosync and several others, and they are all great. They can be expensive however, but the good news is, with the wide availability of the internet, and broadband technology - you can get the very same quality stuff for generic prices if you know where to look. If you are a meditator ( and you should be!) using these audio files can be addictive and blissfully fun, I have - and know many other peers who would rather meditate now, just about over any other recreational activity.
